DD101 – Introducing The Social Sciences TMA01 Drawing on what you have learned from the Making Social Lives DVD and Learning Companion 1, describe some inequalities on City Road. City Road is a diverse, multicultural thoroughfare located in Cardiff. At first glance, it resembles a typical city street, bustling with takeaways, shops and nightlife. However, once you look beyond the infrastructure and traffic, inequalities become apparent. My understanding of inequalities is ‘the unequal distribution of valued social resources within a society or between societies.’ (G. Blakeley et al., 2012, p. 24). This assignment aims to highlight a variety of inequalities and outline the effects of how access to economic and social resources, can have an impact on everyday lives. Xquisite Africa is described by Lloyd Robson as ‘one of my favourite shops on City Road’ (Making Social Lives, 2009, scene 2). Janet Symmons, proprietor of this diverse shop displays a passion for importing goods from Africa and Ghana. This process helps the economy in the area of her origin. With her products targeted at an ethnic market, the residents of City Road no longer need to travel to London to meet their needs. The ability to source desired products locally helps to create a sense of belonging for her customers, giving them the opportunity to express themselves. However, it is apparent that Janet herself has been affected by ethnic inequality. After ten years as a resident of the United Kingdom, feeling that she had to conform to an identity that is potentially defined by others took its toll and she returned to Africa for a break. ‘One day I wake up and I realised I couldn’t recognise me,’ Janet explained to Lloyd Robson (Making Social Lives, 2009, scene 2.)
