The majority of the civilizations throughout the world have been established by men and as a result, men have created the social customs of the civilizations. Those men in power have attempted to use various justifications for male superiority such as biological differences. Fabricated justifications such as this have molded civilizations in ways that oppress women. As the feminist movement has progressed, it has done is best to challenge those ideologies created to keep men dominant. The challenges that feminists present to end male privileges may help to create changes but ultimately it will be able to complete remove male privileges, especially in patriarchal societies.
Marilyn Frye’s “Oppression” explores the true meaning of the verb oppress and how the definition is exclusive to women; men cannot bare the title of oppressed because they are not at a disadvantage in society. Sandra Lipsitz Bem’s “In A Male-Centered World” addresses the questions of whether there are biological differences, such as hormones, that make men and women different; Bem makes a point in noting that the significances that a society attaches to the differences between men and women are what matter, not whether or not there actually are any notable differences. Gloria Steinem’s “If Men Could Menstruate” questions how differently menstruation would be treated if men were the ones experiencing it instead; according to Steinem, menstruation would become something one would want to have in order to prove masculinity in the hypothetical scenario. Lila Abu-Lughod’s “Do Muslim Women Really Need Saving?” questions whether the women of Afghanistan truly needed saving from the burka; the answer is no and the burka is interpreted differently in their society as opposed to the American society.
