Dogs are man’s best friends. This saying is very famous to each and everyone of us. But, look at what’s happening to dogs around us. They are being slaughtered, eaten, beaten to death, put to dog fights and being abandoned. Is this the right treatment to your so-called best friend? I would like to discuss to you about dog cruelty especially on dog slaughtering and eating. According to my research, dog slaughtering and eating is the most common type of dog cruelty here in our country. Do you know that despite a national law banning the practice, close to 500,000 dogs are slaughtered and eaten here in the Philippines every year? Even though since 1998 it is illegal to consume dog meats, the complete lack to enforce this law allows the markets and the restaurants to openly sell live dogs as well as dog meat. It really is common in the markets and restaurants especially in the rural areas. Back in our province, it is somewhat common to eat dogs. I have already seen many dogs being slaughtered and are to be sold to the market. Not only is this practice done in our place but also everywhere in our country. Many cases of dog slaughter are always reported . According to an article last June, a man was caught by the Provincial Police Office of Laguna in the act of slaughtering dogs on his backyard. He was selling dog meat and dishes in the community of Siniloan, Laguna. According to my research, slaughter-bound dogs are being discovered in Manila, Tarlac, and Ilocos Sur and most especially here in Baguio. These are many other places where dogs are being killed. Dogs should be really protected because they are very helpful to us. There are some agencies and organizations who help rescue poor dogs like the Philippine Animal Welfare Society(PAWS) and the Animal Kingdom Foundation. We also have our Animal Welfare Act. But, these are not enough to stop dog cruelty. We
