Does the media help us or hurt us? EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! A classic statement used by paper vendors in earlier generations to lure people into buying one. The media today is no different then it was then by making headlines to catch interest. Certain forms of media have been around for generations, but regardless of what time it is they have all had the same style. The forms of media that come out are designed for a certain audience, and the rest are left in the cold. This aspect shows the media having a close relation to the war between ethnocentrism vs. cultural relativism. Generally speaking ethnocentrism can be defined as an idea shared by many individuals that their group is superior to everyone else. This idea is then used in their everyday existence to establish relationships with friends, making judgments about people, and even just talking to someone. The source of the idea could be anything from race to religion, and could be found in large populated societies as well as small. Everything that person does is revolved around that one certain idea they may have about their group, without taking the time to view other sides. Cultural relativism on the other hand is the belief that a common standard cannot be produced until that person experiences the group first hand. All original judgment is halted until they experience that opposite race, religion, etc. with the views of the people who have them. This allows a person to understand the opposite groups point of view first and then make their opinion from that. Doing this has more of an impact on the person because they are forced to look at things from the eyes of another. Thus enabling a broader view of ones own society compared to a completely different one and questioning both. Most people before they go to work in the morning turn on the TV to watch the news, and
