Does Different Type’s of Childhood Abuse Lead to Different Types of Mental Disorders? Southern Connecticut State University Abstract Adults diagnosed with Dissociative Identity disorder, Schizophrenia and Borderline Personality Disorder all have one major criterion that has been linked to the cause of these mental disorders, severe childhood abuse. (Ṻҫok & Bikmaz, 2007) Dissociative Identity Disorder which can be abbreviated as DID is a severe condition in which two or more distinct identities, or personality states are present in an individual. (Bagley et al, 1995) A young child who has experienced abuse whether it be physical, sexual or emotional may unconsciously spilt their ego up into different selves in order to cope and address the pain of being a victim. (Bagley et al, 1995) The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines schizophrenia as a very serious mental illness in which someone cannot think or behave normally and often experiences delusions. Psychotic symptoms such as visual hallucinations, hearing voices and paranoia have be found to be related to childhood abuse in schizophrenic patients, but not limited to Schizophrenia. (Ṻҫok & Bıkmaz, 2007) The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Third Edition listed Borderline Personality Disorder as a condition where the individual has problems with regulating emotions and thoughts. Most people with (BPD) also engage in a lot of impulsive and reckless behavior. Unfortunately, they also have really unstable relationships with people. Adverse events during childhood, such as physical, emotional and sexual abuse contribute to the development of many, especially these three disorders.
