DOCUMENTARY PERSUASION Persuasion is a technique salespersons, vendors, and dealers use to make consumers by their product. On television, infomercials use a great deal of persuasion by using different methods. For example when trying to sell face cleansing products, vendors may display before and after results of clients that use the product. This method is used to prove that the product actually works. Also because many people view celebrities as role models, vendors may interview them to attract viewers with the hopes of them following the celebrities’ actions, which may lead the viewer to buy the product. Moreover besides salespersons and dealers, documentary filmmakers also use a series of techniques to persuade their audience into believing that the information being presented is reliable and true by stating facts, conducting interviews, and but not limited to the music being played. Statistics show numerical data that present significant information. While trying to convince an audience, statistics are one of the techniques that documentary filmmakers may use. However when giving statistics, it is very important to include the source from which the information was taken. By providing background information about the source, it reassures the viewers that the knowledge being presented is of some value and they will be more than willing to accept it. Another tactic that is useful when trying to persuade are interviews with professionals. Because professionals are trained individuals, such as medical doctors, lawyers, health specialists, etc., it is no doubt that they know what they’re talking about. Using this method is an excellent way that filmmakers persuade their audience and they use it to their advantage very well. By having educated persons talk about significant information, it makes the audience more receptive to the knowledge being provided.
