Grendel: Evil? Or Misunderstood? Does being an outcast in society make a person evil? That is one of the questions that is constantly addressed in the epic poem, Beowulf. In the epic poem, the great hero Beowulf sets out to kill the supposed demon Grendel, who everyone widely views as one of the most evil beings to walk the Earth.
How does Shakespeare present Iago as the devil in Act 2 scene 3 of Othello? There are numerous vast and complex characters that Shakespeare creates in the play Othello; however one of the most complex is the character of Iago. Shakespeare here has created a real villain, who twists and turns his way into manipulating, poisoning and corrupting others around him. Iago has no thought for those who get in his way and is hell-bent on achieving his goal at any price. His very existence is for the destruction of the truly innocent.
What made it even more ironic was how the accusers were actually those who were the truly evil ones, with ulterior motives behind their baseless accusations. These accusations were often formed from personal vengeance, jealousy or greed. One example was how Putnam found these accusations as a convenient way for him to get more land, and his own greed fueled his accusations against many of the noticeably richer members of Salem. ”And there be none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbours for their land!” Giles Corey had stated this in court.
This play is based on the salem witch trials in 1950's. John McCarthy conducted witch trials. He done this by accusing American leaders of being communists or communist sympathizers, the people he accused faced loss of employment, destruction of their careers and even imprisonment. McCarthy was very evil. When Miller wrote this play he used it to show the corruption of the witch trials and used the play to represent people in 1950's America, a distinctive allegory.
This quote portrays the greed contained in people, "He was on the point of foreclosing a mortgage, by which he would complete the ruin of an unlucky land-speculator for whom he had professed the greatest friendship." (Irving 8). Tom had basically been the Devil himself, supporting the fact that the Devil is a mere isomer of his counterpart,
Two passages highlight tremendous fault in judgment pertaining to witch hunting, both of which I will explain and reflect upon throughout this essay. During the first act, upon Mr. Hale’s entry, Miller exposes the connections between communism vs. capitalism and good vs. evil. As Mr. Hale holds that “the devil is a wily one” (Miller, 35) and must be stopped, there were many in both the United States and communist Russia who condemned the opposite party of espionage in an effort to undermine what they believed to be “good” in the battle of “good” vs. “evil”. Russia, for example, during the years of Stalin’s reign, held military tribunals for those accused of conspiring with the capitalists. The average duration of these trials was three minutes (class notes, POL 334) and, most always, the tribunal
DANTE’S PURGATORY “O Christians, arrogant, exhausted, wretched, whose intellects are sick and cannot see, who place your confidence in backward steps…why does your mind presume to flight when you are still like the imperfect grub, the worm before it has attained its final form?” (Purgatorio 10. 121-128) Dante and Virgil take visit the first terrace which is revolved around pride and as we know pride is recognized as one of the most terrible sins that will lead one to hell (Inferno) because pride is revolved around the concept of greed and loving oneself to the extent of being oblivious of the accomplishments of others. Not only is pride one of the most notorious sins in both the Inferno and Purgatory but recognized as one of the most seven deadly sins according to the
Shakespeare has written his character Iago as the perfect stereotypical sociopath. In fact, the play Othello could be used as a case study in a psychology class. When one reads down the list of sociopathic traits Iago has them all; he is a sociopath to the nth degree. Some including Othello, would argue that Iago is the devil incarnate. Othello, himself states “that thou be’st a devil, I cannot kill thee.” He then stabs Iago but only wounds him, showing that he thinks that Iago is the devil.
A balance to this was seen as white witches and black witches were both seen to exist. White witches were described as wise men and women, or cunning folk however black witches were understood to influence events both positively and negatively. Concern grew about being able to trust black witches fromthe 1550s, although specific dates also indicate times when persecution increased and decreased like the time when Matthew Hopkins 'Witchfinder general' intiated a heavy movement of persuction within the 1640s. Witchcraft was seen as dangerous and threatening to the people of this time, for example it was associated with heresy which is speaking out against the religious beliefs during that particular time period which was an offence you could be hanged for. Black witchcraft was believed to be inherited from the female side as women were seen as inferior to men and more likely to fall to temptation to the devil, for example 90% of those charged were women.
