Do You Agree with the View That the Reformation of the 1530’s Was Caused Mainly by Henry’s Desire for an Annulment of His Marriage to Catherine of Aragorn?

During the early 1530’s King Henry III of England decided to cease all ties with Rome and the Pope to seek out ‘new’ revolutionary ideas in an attempt to found his very own Church of England. There were many factors that contributed and influenced this bizarre decision, with the main one in question being that was the reformation due to his desire to divorce Catherine of Aragorn for the ‘new girl on the block’ Anne Boleyn. At the time the pope wasn’t in a position to act upon the great matter due to captivity, but nor could Henry wait until he was able and the sight of ecclesiastical revolution gripped many in central Europe. Thus, the English reformation occurred with the crown being the head of the whole of England. Sources 7, 8 and 9 all voice their opinions on the matter, both sources 7 and 8 disagree with the hypothesis whilst source 9 remains undecided in the matter. Source 7 highlights the reasons as to why the bible translation is required along with reform. William Tyndale, the author of source, says how ‘the scripture ought to be in the mother tongue’ and that the arguments ‘against’ translation are simply ‘false tricks to make you follow them blindly’. This is suggesting to us that the Christian church, under the pope, is a manipulative order in which the majority of its subjects have no intelligible idea as to what rules and laws they are abiding to. This was recognised by many minor factions within the German lands at the time and new revolutionary protestant ideas were emerging which caught Henry’s eye. Reformers such as Martin Luther inspired Henry to move away from the old regime and assert his position as king of England through reformation, which would in turn bring the country under the crown, instead of the far away and naïve Pope having jurisdiction in Henry’s lands.
