Humans are creatures that seek improvement, whether be it technological or social, we seek to improve in all aspects for the betterment of society, that includes even the elderly whom our government refers to as an irreplaceable and valuable source of experience that acts like the glue that holds families together. Hence, I agree to a large extent that the lives of the elderly are indeed improving as not only do we wish to improve their lives, technology also allows us to. There is an age old saying, “health is wealth” and this is one aspect of the lives of the elderly that is improving. With breakthroughs in medical science and technology, the life spans and health conditions of the elderly have never been better. According to a study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2005, the average lifespan of an individual in developed nations has increased by 4.5 years as compared to people just 10 years ago. Not only that, the governments of nations have also been educating the elderly on taking better care of themselves so as to allow them to enjoy longevity and a healthy body. One example will be Singapore’s health campaign for the elderly where the elderly are educated about the importance of managing a proper diet, regular exercise and health checks. This is unlike the past where the elderly was often neglected as the government had other priorities such as economic growth and did not possess the capabilities of launching such campaigns. Medical science of the past was also less advanced to the extent that heart attacks, one of the most common elderly-killer diseases, was fatal as coronary bypass surgery is a relatively new method of saving one from cardiac arrest.
