Do you agree that Henry VIII was well equipped for king ship? On the 24th of June 1509 seventeen year old Henry was coroneted at Westminster Abbey. Henry the VIII wasn’t the original heir to the throne. It was his older brother, Arthur who had been brought up to be the second Tudor king of England but when he passed away in 1502 young Prince Henry’s fate changed and he became the heir to the throne. But would he be ready for kingship when he hadn’t had the training that his older brother was nurtured with? At the same time the view on kingship was changing being a king in the 16th century didn’t just mean wealth, power and a good army. A good king also had to be an intellect, a fashion statement and extol Renaissance values which meant the regeneration of intellectual and artistic activity. Through the use of 3 different sources: a painting and two statements I will investigate if Henry the V111 was ready to live up to these expectations despite his upbringing. In general source A and 7.7 agree whereas source 7.9 stands alone to disagree thus Henry V111 was overall well equipped for kingship. A valued aspect of kingship in the 16th century was a king’s physical appearance. It should express power, strength and fashion. All 3 sources comment on this aspect which highlights how important it was at the time and even on the surface hints at the fact that Henry was successful in this area. Source A is a painting which epitomizes the expected appearance for a king at the time. He is illustrated in this painting with muscular calves which were important for riding, hunting and in battle. Source 7.7 agrees with Source A, “above the usual height with an extremely fine calf to his leg.” The fact that the two sources cross reference makes them both more reliable. They agree in another area too, which is that Henry portrays a “Pretty” image. In the painting too Henry is wearing
