Agathe Detanger 2nd B Do we really want teachers to be replaced by technology? Internet, mobile phones, smartphones and social networks are shaping the daily lives of many people. We are living in a society called the “digitally native generation”. We are and are becoming very reliant of this technology. The science of technology will never cease to improve, but should technology take over our education systems? Technology will never surpass teachers but has already dramatically changed the ways of teaching and learning. Learning needs to be personalised for many reasons. Firstly, a computer cannot replace the communication and social interaction between the teacher and his/her student. However the learning starts when there is interaction between the teacher and the pupil. Furthermore each student learns at a different rate and in different ways, hence the need of having the warmth and the interaction of a human being. The teacher will often adapt according to the students in order to suit the integrity of the class. An instructor’s approach is by using “Socratic learning”. This technique involves leading the students towards the end of the lesson or the solution of the question. It leads them to their own discoveries instead of simply being told the answer. Therefore they understand and memorize the lesson with ease and learning is made fun. “Virtual” cannot do so. Teachers do not simply impart knowledge; a good teacher also inspires young learners. But what is a learning environment nowadays? Can it be determined by the bond and trust between a teacher and his/her pupil? A child in order to gain in maturity and adapt correct manners in his daily life needs another elder to benefit from. The teacher is also a very big influence on a child’s behaviour.
