This contradicts the positive view towards religion and poses it in a much more negative light. From a functionalist perspective, Emile Derkheim defines religion in terms of the contribution it makes to social integration, rather than any specific belief in God or the supernatural. However this can be counter-argued in that just because an institution helps integrate individuals into groups this does not mean it is a religion. To try and come to a conclusion as to whether religion does actually benefit society as a whole as well as its individuals the problem arises when trying to look at all religions and being able to come to one inclusive decision. All religions vary therefore to generalise all of the religions amongst many different societies and cultures can become increasingly difficult.
Assess the view that, for minority ethnic groups, the practice of religion and membership of religious groups is mainly in the form of cultural defence (33 marks) The term ethnic minority describes a group of people that are part of a community with shared characteristics. These groups tend to hold their religious faith as an important part of their identity. Due to the increase of immigrants, mainly Asians, Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshi and Caribbean migrants, Britain soon became known for its cultural diversity and religious pluralism. Aashish Gautam Professor Dr. James Wright English 1302 10 August 2015 Necessity of Public Engagement with Multiculturalism in America The United States is a land of immigrants. This country has people of different backgrounds from all around the globe. Because of the people of different race, ethnicity, and nationality, America is one of the diverse nations in the context of cultures. Sharing different cultures and tradition among the people of different backgrounds can certainly incorporate uniformity among people. One negative aspect to his essay would have to be his bias toward conservatives and the rich. He deliberately labels out the rich in many of his examples by pointing out how they claim to be Christian but do not wish to help aid the poor. As for conservatives, he not only points out George W. Bush but refers at times to religion as “conservative religion.” This clearly shows his bias toward them and could be a way for him to associate them with the American Christianity problem. I believe McKibben has a great point on this issue. As American Christians, we always believe that if we do good deeds or help ourselves we go to heaven.

Prohibition started crime and corruption. The Klu Klux Klan started when immigration came to America, and religion started arguments about evolution, which then lead to the scopes trial. During the 1920s era, religion in America experienced a cultural revolution.

As people age and babies are born, societies inevitably become diverse in the ages of individual members thus, again creating a form of cultural diversity. Another dimension of cultural diversity deserving attention is one’s ethnic group or ethnicity. An ethnic group is “A group set apart from others because of its national origin or distinctive cultural patterns” (Schaefer, 2011). Cultural diversity is open and evident in the United States, as one may journey into almost any city and see firsthand. An example would be Little China Town in Los Angeles, California.
