Affirmative Action vs. Diversity Cara Graham 05/24/2012 Eng 308J Affirmative action is trying to accomplish the diversity of college students admitted. But diversity and affirmative action aren’t the same. Affirmative action is centered on moral and social responsibility to modify wrongs done in the past to those Americans who were not of the majority population. It focuses on taking positive steps to get individuals into the organization. Diversity works to change the culture of that organization.
The articles, “On College Forms, a Question of Race, or Races, Can Perplex” by Susan Salney and Jacques Steinberg and “A New Kind of Affirmative Action Can Ensure Diversity” by Richard D. Kahlenberg, both discuss the college application process and how race plays into it. However, the articles come from opposite view points. Kahlenberg talks about how the government will soon take away the school’s way of “racial discrimination” however they will find new ways to continue to ensure diversity. Salney and Steinberg show the applicant’s viewpoint and their struggle to “choose” a race to better their chances of getting into a college. Both articles agree that cultural diversity in a college is important.
Why is diversity valued? Diversity is a loosely used term used to describe various demographics, such as, race, religion, sex, or sexual preference. Diversity is valued because different views, ideas, religions, cultures, etc. are meshed into one, and can give light to new ideas, views, and opinions. There are so many people living in America from so many different cultures, and that in my opinion is leading us to see religion in a whole new light.

Native American and Asian American Experience in America America is unique among nations because it is made up of people who immigrated here from around the world to search a new and better life. As a result, its population includes people of many races and ethnic groups. People who belong to a specific race are distinguished by genetically transmitted physical characteristics, such as skin color or eye shape. People of a certain ethnicity are classified together on the basis of common history, geography, nationality, culture, religion, and language. America’s interracial and intercultural composition, prejudice, and tension between different groups has been inevitable, especially since whites (Anglos) emigrating from England felt they were innately superior and dominant over people from other nations and people of color.
Castillo 2 Diversity in America not only presents a host of intimate snapshots of culture and heritage, but documents the struggles of nationalities to integrate into the “melting pot” society of America, and highlights the strength and integrity of various cultural leaders and thinkers.” http://www.worldandi.com/specialcollection/special-collection-diversity.asp. So if you don’t think that diversity in America is not very important think again because we are a country of diversity. That’s what makes America the way it is and that is the way it has always been. Even back to when America was being colonized there was diversity with Native Americans, Europeans, Mexicans, and Latin Americans. Another reason why American exceptionalism is viewed as good is because we have extremely good medical care here.
Diversity in College Campuses Diversity is defined as the inclusion of individuals representing more than one national origin, color, religion, socioeconomic stratum, sexual orientation, etc. This has led to initiatives such as affirmative action which enables favoring members of a disadvantaged group who suffer from discrimination within a culture. This has led to colleges and universities taking action in attempts to make campuses much more inclusive and welcoming for people of all different backgrounds. This was definitely one of the issues I was most concerned with when I decided to attend Long Beach state after my senior year in high school in 2010. I grew up in a small town where a vast amount of diversity was not fully present.
Carmen Espinal Mrs. Ranes ENC1101 December 8th, 2013 Remediation Analysis America has always been characterized for the acceptance of large amounts of immigrants and the cultural diversity that gives the nation its complex culture. However, integration of cultures and immigrants becomes a complicated process when the immigrants themselves raise boarders around them and limit their experience to ethnic groups. In order to express my opinion more efficiently, I chose to remediate my essay into a short video that would target recently arrived immigrants, specifically college students. This new media choice will allow me to communicate my thoughts and suggestions to all immigrants in a universal way, and hopefully encourage foreign students to
The professor stated that the development of different racial groups was due to the theory of genetic drift; we all originally started in the same location and spread outward. This theory got me thinking about how we form racial groups on a smaller scale and how complex it truly is. Race and ethnic group labels in America are not clearly based on criteria that everyone understand, agree with, and can easily see. As a result, someone else may label you in a way that you consider wrong and very offensive. This can instantly create an obstacle when trying to communicate even if the slur was unintended.
As college neared filling out applications became more of a ritual, and I found that by being born into a white middle class family would hinder my financial status rather than help it. Recently an article appeared in the Iowa State Daily, which addressed the issue of a white-only scholarship. In addition to the scholarships offered to members of the minority races, a scholarship should be offered to the members of the decreasing majority. Whites or Caucasians make up a group just as Native Americans, blacks, and Hispanics do. The one thing that separates whites from these other groups besides skin color is the fact that for each minority group, there are several scholarships that pertain to each.
