Introduction of Business, History and Management of Disney The Walt Disney Company (Disney) was founded on 16 October 1923 by Walt and Roy Disney as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. It is the largest media conglomerate in the world in terms of revenue. Before diversifying its business into parks and resorts, media networks and consumer products, Disney established itself as a leader in the American animation industry at the very beginning. In fact, Disney is best known for the products of its film studio which is the Walt Disney Studios. Under the management of Robert A Iger, who assumed the position of CEO in 2005, Disney had recorded a net income of $5.7 billion, an increase of 18% over last year[1]. In this project, we are going to study and evaluate the studio entertainment (films division) of Walt Disney Company. Development of Disney in Hollywood The first movie of Disney, named Steamboat Willie, was showed in 1928 and introduced the well-received Mickey Mouse to the world. In the next three decades, Walter Disney and his team spent many time to collect tales from different countries and filmed it into classic animated movies such as Snow White, Dumbo and Peter Pan. Through couple decade’s development, Disney has become a leading firm in Hollywood. Their products are no longer bound by the deep rooted family-friendly impression. Currently, Disney owns six movie-publishing brands, namely Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax Films, Pixar Animation Studios and Lucasfilm. Each brand designs and produces specific types of movie to serve its own target customers. By doing so, Disney can successfully obtain a complete coverage on every audience group.
