Chad Roberts Human Resource Management: Discussion Question #1 Saint Leo University Dr. Coronel March 04, 2014 What are considered to be the functions of the manager from an HR perspective and how good do you think you are at performing these functions? Human resource management (HRM) is considered to be a very important aspect modern working organizations, and at the very core of being an effective human resource manager lies managing people. According to text the very definition of human resource management is the effective management of people at work (Ivancevich & Konopaske, 2013). The functions of the manager are very encompassing but not limited to the following: providing well trained and motivated employees, communicating policies, managing change, helping the unit achieve its goals, and keeping a desirable quality of work life in the organization (Ivancevich & Konopaske, 2013). As an HRM manager we know that we must be well rounded and adaptable to many aspects that affects our employees. I believe one of the biggest functions of the manager is to foster a work environment where employees can thrive, whether that be in areas of job skills, compensation, pay, awards, policies, or self actualization. It is the responsibility of the manager to ensure that employees see themselves as a part of the organization, growing as the organization does. To support this ideal the research shows people leave managers, not companies (Ivancevich & Konopaske, 2013). I believe my strongest ability as a manager is to be adaptive to many situations. Working for the Army as a civilian comes with great pressure to ensure Soldiers get equipment and supplies within a timely matter.
