Discuss the role and importance of Alfieri in a view from a bridge Alfieri is the friendly neighbourhood lawyer and narrator. At the beginning of the play he sets the scene by telling the audience that this story is placed in Red Hook, a slum in Brooklyn. Alfieri Is a crucial role in this play as he is the character that wants to avoid pain and suffering amongst the Italians and the Americans. He is in the middle of the American law and the community law. This is because he ‘was born in Italy’ and was there until he ‘was twenty-five’. Even though Alfieri has to abide by the American law as he is a lawyer, he sympathises and understands the community law due to his background heritage. Alfieri is an important role in the play as he helps the audience understand the story. He helps to understand background information and more. One of Alfieri’s main importance is getting the audience involved and playing with their emotions to understand the story. This includes feeling sympathy at some points for the characters and also some rage and anger. Alfieri also gives the feeling that he is retelling the story, because he mostly speaks in the past tense. The community in this play respect Alfieri because he is a lawyer and helps the rest of the characters out. This includes Eddie Carbone (the main character in the play) who went to him for advice. Even though Eddie didn’t listen to him as much as he should as he was in denial, Alfieri gave the best advice he could for him. Alfieri was truthful and told him direct that ‘she can’t marry’ him (Catherine) and how he ‘wants somethin’ else’. Everyone but Eddie knew his love for Catherine but Alfieri was the one to say it in order to protect him. His advice to Eddie was to ‘let her go’.
