Discuss the concept of Halal and Haram in Islam. Muslims around the world practice the religion of Islam. The practice of Islam includes observing dietary laws which come from Islamic teachings. Islamic dietary laws define foods that are Halal, meaning lawful or permitted. Muslims avoid food and beverages that are Haram, meaning not permitted. In Islam, the consumption of Halal food and beverage and using Halal consumer products are obligatory in serving Allah, the Creator and the Almighty. Therefore, Muslims communities are very mindful of food ingredients, handling process and packaging of food products. The foods and beverages are only Halal if the raw materials and ingredients used are Halal and it is fully compatible to the Islamic guidelines. “For the believers! Eat of the good things that we have provided for you. And be grateful to Allah, if it is Him you worship. He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of pig, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then is he guiltless. For Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.” (Surah 2.172-173, King Fahd trans.) This is detailed in verses 2:173, 5:3, 6:145, and 16:115 of the Qur’an. An exemplary verse is quoted here: “He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and any (food) over which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But if one is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” There are several factors that determine the Halal/Haram status of a particular food stuff.
