Discuss how the characters of Huck Finn and daisy Miller are “typical” of young people (albeit from different social backgrounds) in 19th century America. The characters of Huck Finn and Daisy Miller are represented as typical young people eager for adventures. They both have simple moral code especially when it comes to communicating with high society. Huck and Daisy are impulsive, attract attention, act without hesitation and are very open minded. They have money as a luxury, rather than need and never think about them as something big in life. Huck Finn is a young natural boy trapped in the “civilized” world. He feels like a wild animal whose owners are trying to modify for the audience so he would fit everyone’s idea of a young boy. Huck feels that stereotypes are bad for people and civilization corrupts but not improves people. He is from the people that are eager to learn new things, but does not want to be enslaved by religion and politic power and civilization. He is sometimes ignored by the other boys and seems not that popular in the group. He does not fit very well with others because his way of thinking is different. Huck can not imagine the things other boys are thinking of when they play together and thus is left alone. Finn’s way of thinking is the “nature learning” rather than what the other boys believe in – the “book learning”. Huck’s adventures are taking place near the river which is most of the times substituted by the ghetto streets in the other American towns or cities. This is the place that you have your freedom and you can choose you path in life and control your life, but this is also the place where you get in touch with criminals, shipwrecks, dishonesty, and great danger.
