Our presentation is on Katharine Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory. Here is a quote from her book that captures the essents of her theory “Cure sometimes, treat often and comfort always. Katharine Kolcaba was born Katharine Arnold Dec. 8th, 1944 in Cleveland Ohio She is married and has 2 daughters and 8 grandchildren In 1965 she received her Diploma in Nursing from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland. In the mid 1980’s Kolcaba wanted to further her nursing career, so she returned to school. In 1987 she earned her RN and Masters of Nursing from Case Western Reserve University.
Leadership in Nursing Essential to quality patient care is the effective functioning of an interdisciplinary team. In most clinical settings, nurses have the closest relationship with patients. For that reason nurses need to take an active role in the interdisciplinary team, they are the front line providers, ensure communication between team members and the patient, and continually advocate for the patient and family. Nurses know how care should be delivered. They can ensure smooth handoffs as the patient transitions through the continuum.

Many times nurses will need assistance helping their patients, and people will be more apt to lend a helping hand if you yourself go out of your way to help others. This not only helps your coworkers but in the long run provides faster more efficient care for the patients. Teamwork may be one of the most important professional characteristics in healthcare.

According to Registered Nurse Natalie Hiner, two years active in the field, a “nurse is well educated and driven in her profession.” Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and approximately two years of experience, Cara Salmon Risser feels that “nurses are successful by just completing the required coursework.” As a new Associate degree graduate, Donald Dillon cites “completion of school and entry into the workforce” as the true success of a nurse. As a collective group of novel nurses, it appears that education is the driving force of career success. The definition of success is varied with job titles and years of experience. Working alongside the Registered and Licensed Practical nurses of my unit, the Mental Health Counselors hold specific opinions of success. To Andra Keister, “a successful nurse is someone who can manage time as well as a crisis situation, demonstrating respect for the efforts of the entire team,” a fact she has come to value in the four years of her practice.
Registered Nurse The career I chose was a registered nurse which is part of the Health Science field. I became interested in this field when I entered high school. My sister influenced this in a way because she is an RN. She showed me all the interesting things they had learned and got to do. Also when I was in the hospital I saw what the nurses did and I thought it was pretty interesting.
Students may also gain clinical experience health care facilities in their last two years. Some registered nurses hold associates degrees in nursing . The associated degree only last two years, this program focuses on technical applications of nursing, and instructions take place in both classroom and clinical settings. The American Nurses Associated states that many registered nurses return back to school to earn their bachelors degree. After getting your registered nurse diploma you will be able to work.
More than any other profession, nursing has long been concerned with establishing professional values and behaviors’ within their discipline. Nurses are people that work within the medical industry, and therefore they see people all of different types, with different medical conditions. There is an inherent need for equality and human dignity, and this is part of the expectation of professionalism that nurses have. Additionally, the nursing industry is broad, encompassing different people in different situations, but there needs to be something that binds them all as nurses. This is where professionalism comes in.
Since I became a registered nurse in UK, it was always in my agenda to continue further studies and gain higher qualifications. So, I registered for a course in Open University towards my degree qualifications while I was in Eastbourne working in a nursing home. Then I moved to oxford to work in an acute general medicine where I worked for 19 months while continuing my studies towards my degree. I also did a short course at Oxford Brookes University in addition to my studies at Open University. My study at Open University as well as Oxford Brookes University helped me to enhance my writing and research skills.
