Disadvantages of multi vitamin Some people believe that if small doses of vitamins are good for you, then more is better. Too little vitamins keep the body from operating at full capacity. Too many, may be damaging to your health. Although there are many vitamins supplements available, it is best to obtain your nutrients through diets. They can’t replicate all of the nutrients and benefits of the food that you eat. The food that you eat has a number of different vitamins, whereas if you take a vitamin C supplement you’re only getting vitamin C and are missing a number of other essential vitamins. Unlike vitamin supplements, many foods have fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals that can improve your health. Sometimes the disadvantages of vitamin supplement intake outweigh the advantages. Some vitamin supplements can be dangerous if you take too much of them. There are two different types of vitamins: fat-soluble and water-soluble. Water-soluble vitamins leave the body in urine, with the exception of vitamin B12, which is stored in the body. Most fat-soluble vitamins stay in the body, over dosing of multivitamins can cause too much of the vitamin to store in the body. Since fat-soluble vitamins can build up, there is more of a risk of problems with them than with water-soluble vitamins. Along with the risk of not being able to expel certain vitamins certain minerals can carry an even greater risk… For example: Too much vitamin A can cause hair, skin and bone problems, and headaches. Too much vitamin D can cause kidney stones, tiredness and mental health problems. Vitamin C is an exception in the water-soluble category, as too much of it can cause kidney stones and gastrointestinal problems.
