- The Role Leaders Have in Cultivating a Culture of Quality In today’s healthcare system, we are currently faced with a number of challenges bringing in a call to arms for organizational culture change. Such examples include: unexpected deaths related to errors during hospital stays; patient dissatisfaction with the hospital experience; and shortages of meds. These issues along with others have caused health systems to be in constant change. Healthcare must cultivate strong leaders who can create a culture of quality throughout the entire organization and industry. 1 Leadership defines what the future should look like, aligns people with that vision, and inspires them to make it happen, despite the obstacles. For organizational culture to change, there first must be an awareness of the need for continual change as it should be the core organizational strategy. Healthcare leaders must establish the need for culture change in the healthcare organizations to achieve a distinctly set of results- to engage and satisfy patients, eliminate error, improve clinical outcomes and secure workforce commitment and motivation. Leaders are those who can communicate shared vision and values, motivate clinicians and other staff to lower their resistance to change, and effectively and willingly participate in the redesign of new systems of care. The role of an organization’s leadership is to engage others in creating teamwork. 2Ideally, all levels of staff in the organization should be capable at making changes, leading change, and managing change for the better of initializing a culture of quality. Change is an opportunity for growth, meaning and engagement but in return requires time, flexibility and commitment at all levels.
