Directionless Youth: Whose Responsibility? Mk III “People born before 1946 are called The Silent Generation, People born between 1946 and 1964 are called The Baby Boomers, People born between 1965 and 1979 are called Generation X, And people born between 1980 and 2010 are called Generation Y; Why do we call the last group Generation Y? Y should I get a job? Y should I leave home and find my own place? Y should I get a car when I can borrow yours? Y should I clean my room? Y should I wash and iron my own clothes? Y should I buy any food?“ Many argue that the youth today is directionless, consumerist and self-centered. Often, the word directionless is used in different contexts, rendering it to be a word with multiple meanings. In the context of the youth of today, is directionless an aspired state or does being directionless mean an absence of a well meaning cause? Is directionless-ness the state of bliss, or is it a source of discontentment. The question which now arises is, “Who, in fact, is responsible for these aimless arrows?”. Fingers are often pointed at the entertainment industry, the music industry, drug pushers, violent video games or even the parents. While, at a glance, the guardians might look mainly responsible for troubled-children, it is not so. The stark truth is that the culprit lies in our society. The 21st century youth is energetic, dynamic, and full of energy; energy waiting to gush through once it finds a purpose and a cause. Due to the fast pace by which the transition from traditional to modern and modern to post modern has occurred has taken the youth aback. The ambiguity created by this transition in Indian youth is a terrible reality. The problem of confusion in the minds of youth has been further aggravated by the absence of a worthy cause.
