Dining Etiquette Jose Galindo CMC/260 April 25, 2012 Keri O'Malley Dining Etiquette When traveling to other countries dining etiquettes can affect positively and negatively intercultural communication and business relationships. People in different countries eat differently than in the United States. Researching dining etiquettes will help you positively when visiting other countries. In Africa if anyone invites you to their private home, it is more probable that they do not have any utensils of any kind, and they will be expecting for everyone to eat with their hands. If you ask for a fork, it is most likely they will be upset because there are accustomed to use their hands. In Iraq it almost has the norm as Africa, but it is important to eat only with your right hand. Some places do have utensils, but you are expected to get a spoon or fork with the right hand only and keep the utensil throughout the meal. If you eat with your hand it is an insult to them as they are strictly forbidden to eat with their left and that can cause a business relationship to end because it is considered rude in the US talking while having food in our mouths. In many countries they take things literal, and it is wise not to test them as they can easily get upset and may lose a business relationship or intercultural communication. In England it is unfavorable to rest elbows on the dining table. They only rest the hands and wrists on the tab le, but hands are on the table at all times. The English people take literally any insult in dining matters and can end any intercultural communication or business relationship. It is best to research and practice dining etiquettes about a country anyone is visiting a week or two before going to practice and get better with their norms.
