Anthony Vasquez student number 0003328495 Digital Citizenship Assignment The use of twitter and facebook were essential to the protesters. But some say that the communications tools didn't make the difference. As stated by Malcolm Gladwell in this article. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/10/04/101004fa_fact_gladwell According to Gladwell people protested and brought down governments even before Facebook and Twitter and was ever invented. And did it before the Internet came along. But they certainly scared the Egyptian regime sufficiently enough that it caused the Egyptian government to take the precaution of shutting down the Internet and mobile phone networks. So social media in a way did had some effect on the Egyptian government. The negative side of this is that now the people had no way of communicating with themselves. Distant friend family jobs etc. So in the end it ended up backfiring on them Here are some ways in which social networks contributed to this revolution: ▪ They created rallying points -- sparks burst into flames of outrage. ▪ The New York Times says a video about Khaled Said, posted on Facebook, became a starting point for the revolutionary movement. ▪ They enabled people to see how many others shared their perspective. ▪ They enabled people to coordinate activity and get the word out about protests. And some ways it caused a negative effect to them • No internet for them because the government shut down the internet • No cellphones because the government shutdown cell phone towers • No Facebook or Twitter this in itself is devastating for me as a digital citizen Here’s an example all in the Family a television sitcom that elevated the discussion about racism in America. http://marriedontelevision.wordpress.com/the-shows/all-in-the-family/ The show didn't create or advance the civil rights
