In time, mainstream Shi’ism would insist that the imam be descended from Muhammad through the line of ‘Ali and his wife Fatima, Muhammad’s daughter. At the time of the ‘Abbasid Revolution, however, there was not such a fixed Shi’i orthodoxy regarding the lineage of the imam. Indeed, to talk about Sunnis and Shi’a at this point at all is something of an anachronism, as there was by no means the clear split that one sees today. What is most important to remember is that in the mid-8th century there were several proto-Shi’i movements who stirred up rebellion against the Umayyad Caliphate in the name of a member of the noble family of the Prophet. Criticism of the Umayyads These proto-Shi’i movements were one of the many challenges facing the Umayyads in the 740s.
However, the word fundamentalism, which originated in Christianity, can be misleading when it is used to describe Islam or Muslim countries. The conservative monarchy of Saudi Arabia, the radical socialist state of Libya, and clerically governed Iran have all been described as “fundamentalist,” but this description fails to take into account vast differences in their governments and policies. Political analysts prefer to use the expressions “political Islam” or “Islamism” when discussing Islam’s many-faceted roles in current social and
Every Muslim goes through this problem in his/her life. In this research paper I will be discussing the world’s attitude towards the Muslim community and how they deal with these crises. But we must remember that it is not always the Muslims who face identity crisis. Anyone who has been previously colonized has to deal with this problem. This happens mainly because the imperial politicians try to create identity problems and use it as a weapon against the colonies.
The World: One Quarter Terrorist The article “Don’t Fear Islamic Law in America” by Eliyahu Ster is a short, general article about how a high percentage of people in America believe that at least some, if not all, of the Shariah Law should be prohibited in the United States because it poses a threat to the American people. Ster, an assistant professor of religious studies and history at Yale, also compares the treatment of American Muslims to that of Jews in the 19th century Europe throughout the article. The author is definitely against discrimination of any kind toward Muslims and thinks taking away their religious rights “ignores our country’s successful history of religious tolerance and assimilation.” When reading the article, I could not stop thinking to myself, “are there really that many people out there in the United States that do not have the same stand on this issue as this author?” The fact that people are
Muslims, on the other hand, are found all over the world, and are followers of the religion called Islam. Not all Arabs believe in Islam, and not all Muslims are Arabs. Islam is the second most popular religion, next to Christianity. The misperception between Arabs and Muslims has led to discrimination during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Both viewed as terrorists.
They speak different languages. Arabs speak Arabic and this is the greatest uniting force among Arabs, but of course, not all Arab American can read and speak Arabic. Not all Arab Americans migrated from Arab countries like Iran or Iraq; some migrated from countries such as France or Great Britain (Schaefer, 2006, p. 285) The department of justice has implemented several programs after September 11, 2001 to protect Arabs and Muslims but that has caused more harm to them. “So even while President Bush was urging Americans not to discriminate against Arabs and Muslims, a different message was being send by those DOJ initiatives” (Zogby, 2003,). Orientalism is an overly simplified view of individuals and history of the Orient with no acknowledgment of transformation over time or diversity within its many cultures (Schaefer, 2006, p. 284).
By studying different forms of theories regarding cultural and religious acceptance such as Neoconservatism, Multiculturalism and Relativism we would be able to define and learn to accept as well tolerate other societies, culture, and religious beliefs to coexist harmoniously. My paper will speak on key points of Islamic religion, Extreme Islamic religion, Western world and cultural societies acceptance theories. Inside current news around the world on the fight against Islamic extremist and non-Muslims has become an ongoing war on our soil and across the world. Extreme Islam does not share the same mentality or values of their less then extreme Islamic brother’s, nor do they share the same values, religion, and cultures system as the rest of the Western World. Islamic Extremism is driven by totalitarian interpretation of Islam “global Islamic
However, more recently there has been a lot of tension between patriotic Britons and Muslims which has led to a lot of anti-Islamic propaganda among the British public. One might ask what the reasons are for this media and campaign portrayal. And are they justifiable? This topic was chosen in light of the tensions building from 9/11, the London Underground Bombings and the Iraq war as well as the more recent murder of British soldier, Lee Rigby, by two Muslim extremists which led to a wave of anti-Muslim propaganda across not only Britain but around the world. Due to the controversy that could be caused by this topic sources from patriotic Britons, Muslims and the media will be used to avoid bias and create balanced and well formulated argument.
Islam is a monotheistic religion which is articulated by the Quran, and the teachings of the Sunnah and the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad, who is considered to be the last prophet of Islam. The word Islam means submission to God, peace, and the way to peace. The followers of Islam are called Muslims. Presently, Wahabbism has gained international attention because of their acts of terrorism within the last few decades. This minority group of Islam is recently fostering the growth of religious fundamentalism.
Two of the country’s religious sects, Muslims and Hindus, have been in conflict for hundreds of years. India and Pakistan are the major places of the conflict. Hindus and Muslims’ misunderstanding and hatred of each other become deeper and deeper in all those years and will not leave easily. What’s more, it seems that there is impossible to reconcile for now. Hindu and Muslim conflict is basically cause by the Muslim conquest in the Indian subcontinent.
