Songwriting Task: Comment on the difference between in approach of four different songwriters who compose in contrasting styles. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, otherwise known in popular culture as Lady Gaga, is a singer-writer who originated in New York. Lady Gaga is most known as a pop singer, composing mainly dance-pop and electronic songs. However, in her earlier years of music, before she met with fame under her pseudo-name, her music was much more driven by acoustic sounds, using real sounds such as piano and electric guitars so achieve a much more rock driven sound. Despite having made a shift in genres, Lady Gaga still manages to achieve a rock sound in many of her songs, working with rock producers and artists like Robert “Mutt” Lange and Queen’s guitarist Brian May. She also has had several other rock ballads in her albums. Lady Gaga typically writes her songs in strophic form, following a typical ABABCB structure. Most of her songs are also written with catchy hooks and typical chord progressions, to help her and her promotional team achieve the best possible success on radio and sales. While many of Lady Gaga’s songs are about typical things that are found as the meaning of most contemporary pop songs such as sex, drugs and clubbing, Lady Gaga found a way to make her music get across the message to spread love to all, no matter what their differences were. Her sophomore album ‘Born This Way’ has many songs reflecting on modern society and problems such as marriage equality, bullying and immigration laws. As Lady Gaga mainly writes dance-pop and electronic music, she keeps a continuous beat through all her songs to keep them eclectic from start to finish to keep the interest going.
