Before I take this course, I may think what intercultural communication and competence actually is. I think that is simple, just tell me how to say something to others, or talk to the foreigners. However, I change my mind during the course. It involves practical communication skills and some cultures of different countries or different races. There are different ways of communication and the difference may be affected by their background and different cultures. I have known some people why they have different cultures and different ways of communication like Americans or Asians. For example, Americans are more independent than Asians. They are only supposed to take care of themselves and perhaps their immediate families. We can see some American students are more likely to ask questions during the lectures but the Asians seldom to do this. According to Hofstede’s cultural patterns, this individualist culture can train their members to speak out as a means of resolving difficulties by themselves, not rely on others. Therefore, I would also like to share my viewpoints here and talk deeply and in detail about the difference between Chinese and us, Hong Kong people. Are they actually different? This may be always the hot topic among Hong Kong people as we always do not recognize ourselves as Chinese. I am interested in this and want to find out the reason. Everyone may know we Hong Kong SARS is belong to a part of China actually and we must think we are the Chinese naturally. However, most of the Hong Kong people still divide Chinese and Hong Kong people as two groups, and they will call themselves as Hong Kong people if they born in Hong
