Dietary Supplements Sasha O. Surley SCI/241 May 23, 2014 Brian Oddi, Instructor Dietary Supplements 2 Dietary supplements are substances you consume by eating or drinking. They can be vitamins, minerals, herbs or other plants, and amino acids. Supplements can be taken in pill, liquid, capsule, or tablet form (,n.d). Some benefits of taking dietary supplements are that they can provide nutrients when the body is lacking, or when certain health conditions cause you to develop a deficiency (, n.d.). Risks to taking dietary supplements are limited, but important. Dietary supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because the risks are so low. Risks include the fact that not all supplements are benign (, n.d.). They can also interact with prescription drugs and have a negative reaction, so warning labels should be read (, n.d.). Some supplements that are considered “all natural” may contain chemicals, prescription drugs, and steroids (, n.d.). Diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin. Some supplements have been said to assist with helping to control blood glucose levels, but there is not specific information to support this (, n.d.). Cinnamon may help improve blood glucose and lipid levels when a person has diabetes (, n.d.). If a person plans on using cinnamon, a brand with a quality seal should be chosen (, n.d.). Cinnamon supplements are classified as a food, not a drug. Unlike medications, supplement Dietary Supplements 3 makers do not have to prove their products are safe or effective.
