Ascanio Ramirez English 150 Devotion Equals Happiness There is a common theme between James Baldwin’s Sonny’s Blues and Franz Kafka’s A Hunger Artist. The piano Lesson is another story that shows the passion for an art. They both have artists that follow their goals and what they love. No matter how difficult the situation becomes Sonny and the Hunger Artist continue to pursue their art. It is an example we should follow. Whatever we love, we should follow. The only way to perfect an art whether it is music, fasting or any other sort of art is to have it become your one true passion. However, while both stories have this common theme they go about it in different ways. The Hunger Artist once knew fame and success. He and all his fans shared the love of fasting. He loses that fame and as his body faded so did the love that was shown towards him. “At one time the whole town took a lively interest in the hunger artist;” However, success to him was not fame it was proving to everyone he is the best at what he does. He wants to prove to himself that he is the best. His dedication was so great t cost him his life. He passed into obscurity but it was what he wanted. All of us in general can learn from this devotion. Devotion in anything will have a bleeding effect into other parts of our lives. Sonny never knew fame. He was the black sheep of the family. Music was his escape. Music was his love. It was difficult for his family to understand that. It make sense considering Sonny’s troubled past, but the wonderful thing about art is that many times he more problems in life you have the more beautiful art you create. Art is about expression. Happiness is pursuing your own goals regardless of what common societal views say you should. That art can spread through other people. “Sonny’s fingers filled the air with life, his life.
