Group 4 Deviance Select a theory of deviance from the lecture notes to explain 5 of the following situations. You can use more than one theory for the different situations. Explain why you selected the theory that applies in each case. Convict committing suicide in prison Alcoholic sleeping in an alley in the slums Gang member involved in a carjacking Financial officer stealing money from his/her company Low motivation in students in remedial math class Becoming a marijuana user Delinquent being court ordered to return to a youth detention facility 1. Becoming a marijuana user. - The theory of deviance I would use for this particular situation is retreatism (abandon goals and means to become addict) I chose this theory because it seemed to be the most fitting for the subject, smoking marijuana habitually instead of pursuing other beneficial goals. 2. Alcoholic sleeping in an alley in the slums - The theory of deviance I would use for this situation is probably retreatism as well, instead of going after a better life for them-self, this alcoholic is sleeping in filth with a 40 in his hand. 3. Low motivation in students in remedial math classes - The theory of deviance I would use for this situation would be conformity... Even though these students have low motivation in class, they still attend. 4. Financial officer stealing money from his/her company - The theory of deviance I would use for this situation is Innovation. This person is accepting the goal of being financially well off by delinquent means such as stealing. 5. Delinquent being court ordered to return to a youth detention facility - The theory of deviance I would use here is rebellion. This person has already been in trouble and continues to deny the norms of society, thus being ordered to return to a youth detention
