The 6 billion people on earth are members of a single biological species: Homo sapiens. But there are striking differences among the world’s people. We may be the same people biologically, but we certainly differ in our tastes, behaviors and beliefs. The capacity for such startling differences is human culture; the study of how people live is the discipline of sociology. This essay seeks to give a descriptive explanation of the emergence and development of sociology and outline the usefulness as well as its problems and limitations as a science. It will start of by first defining the key concepts involved then give a main body from which a conclusion will be drawn. Development is said to be the systematic use of scientific and technical knowledge to meet specific objectives or requirements thus an extension of the theoretical or practical aspects of a concept, design, discovery, invention or change, growth, or improvement over a period of time. Sociology is the Science of society, social institutions, and social relationships, and specifically the systematic study of the development, structure, interaction, and collective behaviour of organized human groups. Or in others words Sociology is the study of society that examines how humans interact with each other and how human behavior is shaped by social structures (groups, communities, organizations), social categories (age, sex, class, race, etc.), and social institutions (politics, religion, education, etc.). The basic foundation of sociology is the belief that a person's attitudes, actions, and opportunities are shaped by all of these aspects of society.
