Have you ever failed a test because you didn’t study for whatever reason? Did you have the time to study? Maybe your notes were inaccurate? Maybe you do not comprehend what you read? Maybe you don’t know how to study? We are not born knowing how to study. Studying is a skill that you must develop, practice and make better. To excel in college, you need to know how to study. Developing studying skills is a critical part of learning. What type of studying best suits you? What time of the day are you most efficient? In order to be successful in college, you must develop good study skills which include: Taking good notes, time management and reading. Firstly, note taking is one of the skills in which you will need to be a successful student in college. Note taking requires a lot of attention. You must be alert to take good effective notes. In order to take good notes, you must have the right materials which include: paper, pens, highlighter, dividers and a folder. One should “keep their materials organised in suitably indexed files, making use of a system of labelling that is clear, bold and easy to read at a glance” (“Getting Organised for Study,” n.d.). By organizing your materials, you will know where to find them. Now that you have the proper materials you are ready to take good notes. You have to listen to what your instructor is saying. Highlight what you don’t understand and make sure to ask questions. Note taking does not mean that you have to write down everything you read or hear. When taking notes, you should write down important information. Your notes should just be a summary of important points. Read through your notes as soon as possible. Study your notes constantly because the more times you go over the material the better chance you will have at remembering. Secondly, to succeed in college you need to have the time to study.
