The conventions of college writing are very complex and if professors are more helpful and patient with first year students as they learn academic discourse, students will be better prepared for all future academic endeavors and they will have a better opportunity to strengthen and develop their voice. David Bartholomae, author of Inventing the University, is a professor who writes about the struggles that students face with transitioning into college level writing and learning to write with authority in academic discourse, all while maintaining a unique voice. I agree with Bartholomae’s views on the subject and his arguments are very valid because he speaks from the status and
CWPA, NCTE, and NWP claim in “Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing,” that “Habits of mind refers to ways of approaching learning that are both intellectual and practical and that will support students’ success in a variety of fields and disciplines” (122). At the Recreation Center, responsibility and persistence are habits of the mind that most students apply. Persistence, which the authors describes, is the “ability to sustain interest in and attention to short and long-term projects,” that pushes these students to come back throughout their education, regardless of how high their workload has piled up (122). When approaching college, students find it much more difficult to schedule exercising while balancing out their college life. There are exams to study for, deadlines to meet, and expectations to live up to.
The information will help me get through my school and finish assignments on time. Also it will help me manage my time and stay on top of all of my classes. Getting through my first year at college will be hard but if I stay organized and focused I will reach my goals and succeed. To be a better student I need to seek extra help and use the resources on campus more often. I need to set goals in each one of my classes and stay focused and put my school work first.
Career planning will help you come up with the right career for yourself and which path to move on. Critical thinking is all about your brain process and how you think. Academic writing will help you with appropriate tone, formatting and ways of writing, last but not least would be University resources will help you out with everything from research to tutoring.

The most important thing is to use what habits work best for you to remember the information.
For a student to effectively foster reading retention they should learn to take great notes. This skill is one that every student should master. Personality and learning styles are probably two of the biggest keys to academic success. A person’s personality will either make or break their success. If a person is determined, strong willed and always positive, they do not want failure in their life.
