Atkins Strayer University Newport News Campus dma0528@hotmail.com Developing and Leading Teams 2 Abstract Leadership can be explained as being the biggest, first or most powerful person on a team. A leader very often determines the direction of the group and can influence people to follow in that direction. A team is a group of people who are jointly responsible for achieving a shared goal. If one member fails then it can affect the achievement of the team goal. As a leader you can go only as far as your team. If your team fails then you fail if they succeed then you succeed. One of the most important things in developing a team is trust. In developing a team you have to provide frequent feedback and make sure that the team is focused. To empower people you have to be willing to trust others and have to take risks. You have to understand what their goals are and where they want to go to be able to help them. “As your employees understand that you know them they will feel your trust, then they will come to experience the growth that accompanies that trust and you will find you have developed your most loyal employees.” (Halladay) There are several ways to understand and increase the effectiveness of teams and groups. They are as follows, “the characteristics of the groups, the types of teams frequently used in organizations, the ways in which team members develop and learn, the principal factors that influence team effectiveness and two of the many methods that can be used to encourage team creativity.” (Hellriegel & Slocum p 258) Developing and Leading Teams A group is a certain number of people that share goals, and
