The purpose of epidemiology is to aid in establishing preventative programs and to control the development and spread when trends are identified in populations (Miller-Keane, 2003, para. 4). In the United States, the health issues surrounding childhood poverty have been identified as a nation problem by the public health system and are under epidemiologic study on the national, regional, and local levels.
