a boy playing with a doll). Furthermore, social learning theory supports the nurture side of the nature nurture debate by stating that gender role is learnt through upbringing. Bandura found that children can tell the difference between male and female behaviours and they then use this to influence their own behaviour. For example, Bandura et al found that children do no model the behaviour of both of their parents (i.e. a boy may not cook dinner even though they observe their mother carrying out this behaviour).
Most of the time the colors on these aisles are not very bright the colors are more natural. The toys are also more masculine and they show how men are successful and they try to inspire the kids that play with these toys to be more like the action figure that by being like them that they could also be successful. The toys for boys suggest that when they get older they are supposed to get jobs and do the repairs around the house. On the other hand the girl toy aisle is very bright and the colors range from pinks, purples, and yellows. The toys for girls are Barbie dolls, baby dolls, stuffed animals, and doll houses.
Gender Stereotyping in Children’s Toys Today, toy stores divide the many toys, games, and movies into two primary categories: boy and girl. Toys teach children at such a young age what their roles are in society and that they cannot stray from these roles. Through their gender-biased toys, boys learn to be tough, “warrior like” leaders and girls learn to be nurturers. Girls’ toys stress physical beauty and appearance while boys’ toys focus on respect for their physical abilities (Campenni 122). Gender socialization through toys, teaches and reinforces stereotypical gender roles.
They are going through many body and chemical changes. To get a child to talk about sexual abuse could be hard and I believe that is an issue that should be addressed. There are other books, I would consider, such as “My Body Is Special: A Family Book About Sexual Abuse, Elf Help Book” by Cynthia Geisen. Even though it is elementary, we have to consider that some students may not have ever been educated on what is right or wrong when it comes to touching others. I was never touched by anyone but when I was in middle school and was growing into my womanly body, a boy who was 2 years older than me told me I had “milk jugs”.
Monitor every time the child would do this. * Participant – This would mean to monitor a child when they are within a group. * Non Participant – this would mean to monitor the child when they are working on their own with another member of staff. * Trail or Movement – This would be observing a child’s behaviour in the classroom * Target Child – Observing one child In my SEN PMLD class we also use other methods of keeping these accurate within the team we use checklists on the wall, (obviously confidential) for instance we all know that Joe Bloggs bites, so we have his name on a check list that has a tally chart next to his name, the team are aware what this means but if a parent or other person came in the would just see; Week Commencing 25/08/14 Name | Mon | Tue | Wed | Thur | Fri | Total | Joe Bloggs | // | // | //// | | / | 9 | Mary Smith | /// | / | | //// | ////// | 14 | Bob Frances | // | | / | | /// | 6
Me, personally, my parents did not give me the birds and the bees talk, but I was afforded the opportunity to take sex-education in high school. Through the vast amount of information I received, and an accurate picture of the risks, I was able to make informed decisions. I remained a virgin until I met my husband at the age of 19. A successful sex-education program has several high points. The goal of sex-education in schools is to let students know safe means of birth control.
I think it is based off of the upbringing of the child. The toys determine to be appropriate might affect a child’s movement. For instance, a boy who plays with Barbie dolls would attract other female children and start developing female characteristics. Also, playing with Barbie dolls may have the potential to cause that child’s interest to be altered. Clothing plays a major role in your life.
School serves as a formal socialization for most children. Formal socialization is socialization occurring in settings intentionally designed for socialization. Teachers will address the class as “boys and girls.” Also gender is common way teachers separate students (i.e. games and competitions). It is at school that children begin to learn lessons about the relationships between the genders in society.
Or I would sit in front of the television and play with my Barbies. When playing with my Barbies I was able to do anything and everything with them, I sent them on “dates” with my brother’s GI Joes or they would have “sleepovers” and “have swim parties”. There many of things for me to do with them. Some parents may see that as a negative effect, my parents didn’t mind that I played with them so much, it was more of a hobby for me. My family is a small family.
Some toys in both the boys and girls aisles could actually be used in either gender such as Leap frog education, Little Einstein, waterproof cameras and video recorders, and even some video games. Some of the toys will help shape how both genders grow up and think about the world. A lot of kids are a product of their environment the toys they play with and the books they are taught to read. In chapter 4 of the book it talks about all the things I have been writing about in this paper. Things such as; how genders start to realize if they are boys or girls by the age of two and growing up and going through gender schemas.
