Such performers could be seen in Afro hairstyles which demonstrated their pride in being truly black and their lyrics promoted black unity. Rock and roll as a genre of music during the black pride movement was fused with politics. One of the black rock and roll artists to be popular among people of different races was Chuck Berry. Chuck Berry was very popular because he played his guitar powerfully and danced energetically. Through their songs, rock and roll artists argued against the
“Theme for English B” The first thought that came to mind when reading this poem, “Theme for English B,” by Langston Hughes was the dichotomy being used of blacks and whites; along with the differences and similarities that ultimately connect everyone together. During this time period there was controversy over segregation and inequality. Using my background knowledge from US History, in this specific time period that this poem was being written occurred when the Harlem Renaissance was taking place. With this in mind, Hughes word choice and sentence fluency give off a blues/jazz vibe. Since this was a time for renewal and flourishing of black literacy and musical culture, this would make sense to why he incorporated this tone throughout his poem.
She also strives to reconcile her two selves as “like many immigrant offspring, I felt intense pressure to the two things loyal to the old world and fluent in the new approved of on either side of the hyphen” (478). The author’s main point is that she felt that she was under pressure to have “two lives” because she could not focus on one side or another. And reality doesn’t allow her to do that. Lahiri, as a young girl, had trouble balancing her American life with the Indian life at home. She explains how her parents had grown up in Calcutta, and they tried to continue practicing the same culture in America.

The poem Half-Caste is well written poem by a famous writer, John Agard. John Agard was born in Guyana, South America. However, he is half Portuguese and half Caribbean, which makes him a half-caste. Throughout the poem there is a sense of only one main theme, the social out cast of Half Castes or people if mixed nationality. He has emphasized on the different problems they face, and how they are spoken to be inferior and of lower class by the closed minded hypocritical people.
Bracelets dangling and making noises when she moves her arm… The dress is loose and flows, and as she walks closure, I like it. I hear Maggie go "Uhnnnh" (Walker 2439). She shows a very selfish characteristic and that trait is repeatedly brought out in the story. For instance, she begins to ask for things in the house like the chair and desk. Another instance is when she asks her mother for the quilts her grandmother had made, her mother said they were for Maggie; Dee's reply was, “Maggie wouldn't appreciate the quilts” and Maggie says, “Dee can have them” (Walker 2441).
Growing up in the same environment does not always mean that siblings will grow to be the same person with the same values and beliefs. Alice Walker's short story "Everyday Use" is about the conflict that multi-generational families have with understanding the importance of identity and ancestry. The story focuses on the relationship between a mother and her two daughters, Dee and Maggie, over their grandmothers quilts. Unlike Mama, Dee is educated and is envied, Maggie, who was scarred in a house fire when she was little. Dee has returned from a long trip away from home and now determines her culture by the things she gathers from the house like the quilts and butter churn but in the end Maggie is the one with the right idea about her heritage.
I think that her mother has been labeled or stereotyped. Also I believe that stereotyping is wrong. For instance, when Tan states, “It is the sort of English that is our language of Intimacy, the English that relates to family talk, and the English that I grew up with”. Amy Tan speaks in a “variation of languages like academic, a language she does not use at home, but uses when conversing with others outside her family or in her books”. Tan also uses“different English with her family (mother /husband) that she grew up with”.
Furthermore, they inquire for justifications of this movement of racial and social division while implying similar notions to the audience by using collective societal context, structure, imagery, opposites, ironic language and literary devices. The poem “Half-Caste” is written by John Agard who was born in Guyana with mixed racial backgrounds or ‘light an shadow’ (13): his mother is white and father is black. After immigrating to England, Agard had to cope with an impasse due to his cultural backgrounds. Therefore, it is evident that “Half Caste” is delineated by his personal experiences of confronting a generalized, yet invisible barricade. Accordingly, the poem demonstrates the reality of England where multiculturalism and equality fail to establish together.
In Kate Chopin’s short story, “A Pair of Silk Stockings” the protagonist, a caring mother, is the unexpected possessor of fifteen dollars. She planned on spending it on her children, but temptation causes her to give into her desires. The story shows that, sometimes people give into temptation to fulfill desires and forget about their responsibilities. The story begins with Mrs. Sommers becoming the unexpected possessor of fifteen dollars and deciding what to do with the money. “The question of investment was one that occupied her greatly,” because “she did not wish to act hastily to do anything she might afterward regret.” Mrs. Sommers finally decides to, “buy so and so many yards of percale for new shirt waists for the boys and Janie and Mag…Mag should have another gown…she would get caps for the boys and sailor-hats for the girls.” But Mrs. Sommers is impulsive.
