The Road Not Taken is a poem written by Robert Frost. Frost effectively uses language features like extended metaphor and rhyme scheme to help me understand the idea of decision and how it will have a significant change in our lives. He used these features because he wants to emphasise the essence of decision making in our lives and it is relevant because it still applies to all of us. The poem is about actual and figurative roads. It shows us how the decisions we make will give a significant change in our lives. One road will lead to a place and the other road will lead to a different place. A French philosopher with a name of Albert Camus said, “Life is the sum of all your choices”. For me it means that in every decision we make, either the right one or the wrong one, it will still change our lives. Frost uses a language feature called extended metaphor to help me understand why the decisions we make have a significant change in our lives. An extended metaphor is a metaphor that goes throughout the poem. In the first line of the poem Frost sets the scene in the woods. He effectively uses a metaphor to compare the roads to the decisions we make. It shows us that we will come to a point where we need to choose only one path. The second line of the poem is, “And sorry I could not travel both”. The metaphor of roads is still there as we cannot really choose two decisions. We can only choose one. The metaphor of the roads becomes an extended metaphor when Frost wrote, “I doubted if i should ever come back”. The idea of roads and decisions are still there as we cannot really go back to the decisions we make. Robert Frost said, “In three words i can sum up everything I have learned about life, it goes on”.
