Describe and explain the roles of water in living organisms and as an environment for living organisms Water has many different properties than enable it to be easier for organisms to live in. Firstly, water is a great solvent. The importance of this is that the metabolic processes in all organisms rely on chemicals being able to react together in solution. We can see this through many examples for organisms. To start with, there is the transport of nutrients, in glucose and amino acids in the blood. There is also the removal of excretory products, such as ammonia and urea. There is also the secretion of the substances such as hormones. Water is also seen in liquid form commonly, for the movement of materials around organisms, both in cells and on a large scale in multicellular organisms – which require a liquid transport medium. This is because of the hydrogen bonding between water molecules and the molecules are more difficult to separate. Also, very large amounts of water cannot freeze easily or even completely. It can also be used as a solvent as it is a polar substance. There is also the solubility of the water, as it can act as a gas in the environments, which can be helpful for many organisms. It can be seen as a form of transport too, for many different cells. For example, a good example would be red blood cells. A main role of water would be for cohesion. Water molecules can stick to each other, which can create surface tension on the water surface. Cohesion can also make very long and thin water columns, which can be hard to break. An example of this would be the transport of water in the xylem relies on water molecules sticking to each other as they are pulled up the xylem in the transpiration
