The Department of Correction: Applicant Investigation Unit The City Of New York Department Of Corrections or DOC is a city agency founded in 1895 (Department of Correction [DOC], n.d.). The Department of Correction was once known as The Department of Public Charities and Correction. However the agencies separated and became two separate entities during 1895 (DOC, n.d.). The Department of Public Charities was given jurisdiction over the City of New York’s hospitals and almshouses. The Department of Correction was given jurisdiction over the City of New York’s penal institutions. The Unit has a small amount of control over the amount of work load that comes into the office. On average, close to 2,000 individual are investigated in the time span of one year. The Applicant Investigation Unit on average would permit three classes of 300 or fewer candidates to enter the Correction Academy to receive further training. During this span of a year the Unit would revive verification of employment from prior jobs held by a candidate as well as conducting the medical evaluation, psychological evaluation and fitness evaluation. Other workloads that can be classified are orientation that is given to new candidates, which explains the process of the investigation as well as filling out the pre-employment forms. The generation of a call list is also a workload for it determines the number of individuals called in for investigation. In order to cut down on discrimination against candidates they are referred to as number generated by Department Of Citywide Administrative Service. The end outcome of the hiring process is to increase safety with in the jails and reduce the number of inmate incidents. In order to meet these end outcomes certain intermediate outcomes need to be met. This is done by ensuring candidates who are hired meet and exceed the standards set by the Department before becoming a uniform member of service. Increase the number of good and outstanding officers and decreasing the number of ineffective one. In order to measure the performance of Applicant Investigation Unit the performance indicators are the number of incident that occur trough out the Department’s Facilities. In 2010 the Department of Correction has reported a total of 34 incident of an inmate stabbing/slashing another inmate. This number has increase by 62% since 2009 which had a reporting of 21 incidents (DOC, 2012). The total number of use of force recorded in 2010 was 128 incidents (DOC, 2012). This number has increased by 85% compared to 2009 which say a 109 use of force (DOC, 2012). Inmate assault on staff member has also seen an increase from 84 incidents in 2010
