Waking up in the middle of the night because the pain was so excruciating, I then walked to the bathroom to look in my mouth, then I realized I had the beginning of gum disease. Gum disease is inflammation of the gums that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports the teeth. The number one most caused issue is caused by plaque. In my case I had the first step to gum disease. There are three stages of gum diseases Gingivitis, Periodontitis and Advanced Periodontitis (The Truth about Gum Disease. Retrieved from http://www.crestprohealth.com). The first stage I had encountered was inflammation of my gums that was caused by plaque build-up at my gum line, which is known as Gingivitis. My daily brushing and flossing did not remove the film and it produced toxins (poisons). It irritated my gum tissue which lead to gingivitis. There are four steps to get rid of the disease that I was told by my family dentist. The first step is to get a professional cleaning. Once the plague hardens and turns into tarter it cannot be removed with regular brushing. My dentist explained that he would have to use tools that are not available in my house. Brushing better is the second step I had to take, making sure that I am brushing my mouth between two minutes and two in half minutes a day. Trying to reach the hard places with the bristles on my tooth brush was the hardest part. Flossing is the third step to get rid of any kind of gum disease. The flossing removed the left over food particles and plague and it also stimulated and strengthened my gums. Lastly, the fourth step was to rinse twice a day with a powerful mouth rinse that protects against the plague on my teeth. Periodontitis was the second step of the gum disease that I had to go through. It affects the supporting bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place and it is a non-reversible damage. My gums
