Demographics Paper on the Aging Population HCS/490 January 30, 2012 Demographics Paper on the Aging Population The aging population in the United States will increase the demands on the public health system and on the medical and social services. This paper will discuss the statistics on the aging population in the United States, the general effect that changing demographics may have on the health care market, why and how these changes will affect health care, health care-related challenges to this population, how a chronic disease wellness program may affect the costs for this demographic, what the demographics tells one about the marketing needs or services for this population, and how an individual patient, the community, and society as a whole can address these challenges. It is important for one working in health care to understand the effects of changing demographics, costs of health care, the challenges that may affect certain populations, and what can be done to address these challenges. The aging population in the United States is expected to grow over the years due to the extended life span that is anticipating another extension of 10 years by the year 2050 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2003). In the United States the proportion of our aging population will increase from 35 million in the year 2000 to an overwhelming 71 million by the year 2030 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2003), this is more than doubling the number of those aged 65 or older. Seven out of 10 Americans who die each year die from a chronic disease (U.S Department of Health and Human Services, 2010). While it truly is an achievement that our country is able to help people live longer through the vast amount of advancements in technology over the last several decades, it will put a damper on our health care costs in an attempt to treat the chronic
