Famous American president Abraham Lincoln has defined democracy as “Government of the people, for the people and by the people. This is what the true sense of democracy. If we cast a glance at the western countries, we would be so delighted that democracy is working there in the same capacity.
In those countries, there is no difference between theory and practice. But unfortunately, we look towards the Asian countries and especially the Islamic countries; the situation is very much alarming. Either democracy is not found in most of the Islamic countries or in a very non-practicable condition.
Let’s have a look on our own dear homeland Pakistan. It came into existence in 1947 as a democratic Islamic country. Quaid-e-Azam clearly declared that Pakistan would be run under a democratic framework. But we can see for ourselves that since its Independence, Pakistan has been under Martial Law for more than four times. The democratic norms could not gain ground here. Since beginning, the feudal lords have been ruling over our country and they think democracy as a serious danger for them.
The question arises why democracy could not flourish in our country. There are some particular reasons. First of all, our masses are illiterate. They don’t have any awareness of their rights and duties. Secondly, the feudal lords did not want that a common man might get education and hence demand his rights in a democratic government. So they have been crushing a common man and have been usurping their rights for the last many decades and thus denying real democracy.
