CU242P/CT242 Understand the Process and Experience of Dementia 1.1 Describe the range of causes of dementia syndrome There are many causes of dementia syndrome such as age, genetics, medical history, lifestyle and environmental factors. It is rare to get dementia before the age of 65 but people with learning disabilities tend to develop dementia earlier. Many medical conditions can increase the risk such as High blood pressure in mid life, heart disease, stroke, changes to the nerve cells, weakening of the body’s natural repair system and changes in the immune system. People who drink excessive alcohol or who suffer from depression are at risk of developing dementia. You can be at higher risk if you have a relative with dementia. Medical conditions that affect the heart, arteries or blood circulation can increase the chances of developing dementia. Other health factors could include Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Chronic kidney disease. 1.2 Describe the types of memory impairment commonly experienced by individuals with dementia People may forget things like where they put their car keys, loosing things that they have put down and cannot remember where they put things. People also forget to carry out simple tasks such as washing and dressing. They will often repeat things and call people the wrong names. Disorientation, inappropriate behaviour and gait and balance problems. Difficulties with abstract thinking, loss of communication skills, disorientation to time and place, neglect of personal care and safety, hallucinations, paranoia and agitation. We have a few service users who can become aggressive and they do not recognise their families. Another service user swears a lot but she never swore before, the family have difficulties coming to terms with this behaviour and do get upset. We have to then reassure the families that it’s
