AP U.S. History Assignment: Deconstruction and analysis of “Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress” by Howard Zinn Topic of Essay: European’s reason and history of the colonization of America. Thesis: Many times in history we see history from one point of view. Many times horrible deeds are justified and we ignore them since we see these deeds as necessary and justified from only one point of view. Arguments: 1.)

Document Type: Critical essay [Image Omitted: ] Full Text: [In the following essay, Millhauser considers Frankenstein's monster in relation to the tradition of the “noble savage” in literature.] The estimate of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein familiar to us from literary handbooks and popular impression emphasizes its macabre and pseudo-scientific sensationalism: properly enough, so far as either its primary conception or realized qualities are concerned. But it has the effect of obscuring from notice certain secondary aspects of the work which did, after all, figure in its history and weigh with its contemporary audience, and which must, therefore, be taken into consideration before either the book or the young mind that composed it has been properly assayed.
In Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, the author implicates the importance of education. He uses symbolism to show the reader how shallow technology is, and what the effects of governmental power can do to a society with no ideas to contradict it. Education, and the wisdom gained from it, is the base of the very society we live in today. Since the beginning of time we have slowly advanced our ideas and evolved to our present world now through innovation. This novel tells a story of a time where books will be burned and be replaced by television.
One example of bad criticism is from Infinity Book Reviews. Josh Barkman states, “ I really didn’t like the concept the author used for this series. He used the society’s (more specifically, the youth’s) desires to fit into their concept for ideal beauty, and created a world wherein turning “Pretty” was the ultimate achievement that can be attained in life. In this world, all of the “Uglies” undergo an operation when they come of age and turn into party-freak “Pretties” my feel is it down right degrading as a human being.” The reviewer shows he doesn’t like the way Westerfeld writes the novel by taking the concept of girl’s self-conscience and making a huge twist on it. Another bad critique of Uglies is from Imaginary Books.
Harrison Bergeron In "Harrison Bergeron" Kurt Vonnegut makes it 2081. You have perfect equality. Some people must wear "handicaps" to make them merely typical. As the story develops the reader realizes that these handicaps don't really work. In "Harrison Bergeron" Vonnegut show that being the same is an unrealistic and unproductive goal.
Unfair Goverments Some laws just really don’t seem fair. In The Letter from Burmingham Jail punctuate all titles written by Martin Luther King, Jr., and the play Antigone written by Sophocles only Antigone should be italicized both share similarities of just and unjust laws. Dr. King and Antigone, from the play Antigone, both believed in their own way, Dr. King that just because they are of different nationality doesn’t mean they should be treated any differently, and Antigone that there was no reason why her brother could not be buried, that the laws their government set in place were unjust. They felt morally obligated to follow what they felt their gods would want and willingly disobeyed their government in doing so. Dr. King ended up in jail for disobeying the law, as where Antigone ended up being sentenced to death by King Creon for disobeying his law.
They depend upon technology so much they think is a waste of time to open up a book. For example, technology creates so much power to the mind they start to forget things that are important to them . Mildred is just like everyone I the society; instead of caring for Montag and loving him, she goes along with society and doesn’t realize that its making
As Ira Irwin proposed; “The greatest discoveries have come from people who have looked at a standard situation and seen it differently” demonstrating that explicitly searching for a new landscape condemns an individual to a constrained area of discoveries. To make a true revelation an individual must not search; rather, they must look at their surrounds from a new perspective. The important discoveries, those that last, are ones which are not pursued but contrarily are a result of previous actions such as the widening of one’s lens and the way they view the world around them. William Shakespeare effectively demonstrates the notion of looking with a ‘new pair of eyes’ in The Tempest as does Darren Aronofsky in his psychological thriller Black
