Decision Making Case Study: Racin’ Ray’s Wild Day May 14, 2012 CJA/444 – Organizational Behavior and Management Abstract This paper will analyze the case study titled Racin’ Ray’d Wild Day as printed in Chapter 5 of Justice Administration. This essay will cover the following questions: 1. What are the central issues involved? 2. Is the Deputy in compliance with the use of force policy? 3. Should the Lieutenant end Ripley’s pursuit? 4. Should the Deputy have fired warning shots under these circumstances? 5. Complaints and Internal Affairs actions. 6. Are additional policies needed? Decision Making Case Study: Racin’ Ray’s Wild Day The use of police force is a hot topic in law enforcement these days, and the public shows concern for when it becomes too much and department heads have to consider how to handle these situation in light of recent activities that have resulted in deaths of suspects. This paper will analyze the case of Officer Raymond Ripley, who is accused of excessive police force and police pursuit, and the new policy implemented by the department regarding pursuits not concerning violent felony crime or dangers to the public, and other policies concerning firing warning shots. Central Issues The central issues in this case study concern Officer Ripley’s who is patrolling, as an extra job, in an industrial park in his sector due to reports of vandalism and theft of building materials. Officer Ripley is confronted with a suspicious vehicle, and approaches the vehicle in his cruiser with the spotlight on. As he gets closer, the suspect vehicle flees, and in succession Officer Ripley releases his unauthorized dog, fires a warning shot, discharges his unauthorized Taser striking the vehicle, then proceeds to ensure a high speed chase.
