As the affirmative team we believe that nihilism is the most relevant 'ism' in the 21st century due to the changes in the attitudes of society and individuals in this post-modernistic age. Our team split was that of society and individual. Our first speaker examined the relevance of nihilism in our society in the 21st century. She spoke of nihilistic nature of scientific research in terms of skepticism and how in this post-modernistic day in age, we are taught and constantly educated to question everything that is taught to us, using the example of global warming. Overall, highlighting the significance of extreme skepticism in a 21st century society. She explored the idea of “media nihilism” which is present and continues to develop in society. As well as explaining the current nature of the media, she brought up the projection of a perfect being, saying that if we cannot achieve this vision, the meaning of pursuing it is gone. The relevance of this being our society is so dependent on information and communication to get by, we put our trust in the media as an authority to give us news, entertainment and education, and this causes us to in time lose our own moral beliefs. She investigated the affect that technology has on humanity.
