Debating Essay

Debates “The debating society is the most prestigious society in the school!” an overstatement perhaps, which understandably resulted in the heads of the other societies, especially a certain “jew” from the LyCorp, opposing it rather vehemently. However, this article is not another one of our efforts to glorify the society, but a look into why a bunch of kids love debating to an extent that it becomes a passion. Well firstly, MUNing is a lot of fun. Those of you who disagree can go and join LyCorp for all I care! I’m not talking about the countless hours we put into the research or the unheard of countries (e.g. Djibouti, Burkina Faso or Chad for that matter!) we have to represent, and the hilarious clothes we get to don during global villages. I’m talking about the sense of being part of a team which sticks together, which always pulls through no matter what the odds are against it; and of course, a team which has a legacy, and countless stories to share with every one of its succeeding generations. I suppose it’s the rush of adrenaline when you get up to speak in front of a room full of people, ignoring the little voice inside your head telling you that you will make a fool out of yourself, that makes debating so exciting. With your heart keeping time with the clock’s ticking, it could be your worst nightmare, or it could be the world’s most thrilling roller coaster ride. It just depends on how you look at it. Of course, there are the social events, where you forget about your impossible Chairperson and the annoying kid from KGS, and party all night long. If the stories about ROTMUN social events haven’t already reached your ears, let me tell you that the six hours of grueling debating everyday would be worth it all when you get to the beach party, and the months of training seem like nothing
