LOSING MY BEST FRIEND I was never more scared than the day when she shows me that letter. Kaila and I have always been together. She’s my cousin but I feel closer to her than either of my siblings. She’s more than a cousin to me. She’s my best friend, my sister. She knows my struggles, my fears, and my mistakes but never judge me. I’m 3 years older than her but sometimes or should I say most of the time, it feels like it’s the other way around. We separated for like a year when I came to the United States for college but we were always on the phone during that time. Right after that High School, she came and joined. We thought that was it! We thought we would live happily ever after. Oh boy! How wrong we were? We realized our mistake 3 years later when she received that letter from the USCIS in other words “immigration” asking her to leave the country within 30 days. It all started when she got married to her boyfriend Clifford without telling our parents. She met him right after she moved to the states. They met in church and started seeing each other right away I guess that’s what they call love at first sight. I was happy for her and still am because he has been good to her since day one. When Kaila came to NY she had a student visa. They were dating for over 2 years. So one day her boyfriend asked her to marry him, not only because he loved her but also he wanted to make sure that she doesn’t have to leave the country after her studies. She called me crying, that he proposed and she said yes. A month later, they went and got married. 2 months later, she had to go to Haiti to renew her student visa so she can continue with her studies. My uncle not knowing she got married during that time paid a lawyer to do the paper work and of course they said single instead of married. An “honest mistake”, she paid dearly.
