To some people it may not mean anything, but in today’s society, it helps our country greatly. If our country did not have a foreign policy, we could not trade or do business with any other countries. That would be a very bad thing considering the U.S. imports more things than they export. Foreign policy is important for trade, immigration, and power. Before the Treaty of Kanagawa, the U.S. did not have access to trade with Japan because Japan had a strict anti-foreign policy. In my opinion, this was a huge deal because was one of the first successful negotiations with Japan and gave the U.S. “There shall be a perfect, permanent, and universal peace, and a sincere and cordial amity between the United States of America on the one part, and the Empire of Japan on the other part, and between their people respectively, without exception of persons or places.” (Treaty of Kanagawa). Without this, who knows what would have happened with trading between the U.S. and Japan. This all came about because an American ship wrecked occurred and soldiers were held and penalized in Japan. In the Monroe Doctrine, it states that foreign colonization was off limits to the western hemisphere. This was stated to make the U.S. look like they had control even through they did not have the power to back it up. In 1904 President Roosevelt came out with Roosevelt’s Corollary. This pretty much re-stated the Monroe Doctrine, but in this case the U.S. had the power to back it up. “But we must also remember that it is as much the duty of the Nation to guard its own rights and its own interests as it is the duty of the individual so to do.” (Roosevelt’s Corollary).
