Catalog Description
A general presentation of United States history, commencing with the European background and first discoveries. The pattern of exploration, settlement, and development of institutions is followed throughout the colonial period and the early national experience to Civil War era. Lecture 3 hours. No Laboratory.

Teaching Methods
This course is primarily text lecture, and class discussion.
Students are expected to complete reading assignments and review notes from lectures and class discussions. This is to be done before class, in order to be prepared to coherently participate in class discussions, exams, and writing activities.

Description of research assignments:

Using MLA (Modern Language Association) format, write a five-page research paper. Include a brief biography and/or the historical influence of the individual or event chosen from the list below. An event in U.S. History can also be used from the list below. Any subject not on the list can be used with the approval of the instructor. Include a Works Cited page. The Works Cited page does not count as a page. List at least five references on the works cited page. NO WIKIPEDIA! Any plagiarisms found will result in an “F” for the assignment! When in doubt quote the source.
